Why aren't kids at school?

So today I went to my local town and I saw at least 15 kids of school age 5-10 not at school, just out and about with parents?

Are people not sending kids to school?

I'd say most likely an inset day - my dd's was today. I've thought similar to you in the past and wondered if loads more are home educating but generally, when you particularly notice lots of children on a school day, it's an inset day.

I assume you're not in Edinburgh or the Borders, where school finishes at lunchtime on a Friday?

I noticed the same thing yesterday and said the same thing to my husband. Loads of kids all different ages so doubt it was inset days for every school in the area? It was like half term

It might well have been, though. If lots of the local schools are part of the same academy chain, the often have the same inset days as training is shared across the academy. Saves on training costs.

Just in the last few weeks at my child's school. Inset day which effected 4 schools in the area. A half day to prepare for open evening

It's open evening season for secondaries, and a lot of schools have a training day and/or an early finish/late start so that they can set up in the afternoon and/or leave take-down until the following morning.
