Confusion over starting age

Probably a stupid question but here goes - the primary school we are currently looking at for DC (turns 4 next August and set to start that September) states it’s age range is 5-11. This is not something I am familiar with.

does this mean DC wouldn’t start until the following September? Or am I missing something here

thanks

Hi, reception teacher here. If your DC turns 4 in August 2023, then they will start school in September 2023 and be one of the youngest in their year. There's always the option to defer a year if you don't feel they are ready, however I've never personally encountered that. Smile

Are they a state school? If so, they will join at 4 next September. If it’s a private school, check with them if they only offer from year 1 (so year later), many have “pre prep” (pre school) that covers normal pre school year plus reception year. They might have a pre prep on site that they are happy for your dc to go to, but would expect you to apply for the year 1 onwards place as well.

Are you in England?

Loudlythinking · 29/08/2022 20:23

Yes I’m in England, it’s a small state run village school so not private - I was just surprised to see it said ages 5-11 and not 4-11 like the others on the list!
the curriculum states EYFS so I’m assuming that is reception?

maybe I’m overthinking it and it doesn’t really mean anything!

Reception is part of the EYFS. Just go with the knowledge that your little one will be the youngest, or one of Smile

I have seen separate schools that are for EYFS and have Nursery Class (3-4 year olds) and Reception Class (4-5 year olds) and then they move to Primary School (so from age 5). The schools are usually linked though.

It will be a mistake
Check on GIAS. English schools with a reception are 4-11
