How much shall I shorten these trousers?

DGS, rising 5, will start school in Sept. I have said I will shorten the overlong 'Age 5' trousers his mum has bought. He is at the lower end of the 'healthy weight' range by BMI, and slight. I am wondering how much a child of that age is expected to grow in a school year - I know mum hopes these trousers will last a year. Any advice?

My DS is a shortie. I always turn the hems of his trousers up inside and “double hem” them.
Then, when he grows I can just unpick my stitches and use the trousers at their original length. He’s only ever needs his head letting down about an inch in any one school year, but he’s not a fast grower.

Agree, don't cut any material off, just take up a wide hem and unpick it at Easter once he's grown a bit more.

This is "normal". Double hem them to the height he is now and let them hem down gradually a couple of times overthe year. Hopefully they will last you until July :)

I hem to the correct length and then turn them into shorts for the summer.

@PathOfLeastResitance Too late! I've just finished double hemming all 3 pairs. I'll suggest that for next year, though. Thanks for the idea.
