Hi everyone, I am moving my 5 year old ( year 1 this school year) to another school. Do you have any suggestions on how to tell him without upsetting him too much? I have tried before but got upset as he already have a bestfriend in previous school. Many thanks.

Has term already finished without a chance to say goodbye?

I don't think you can get by without him being upset, but in terms of minimising it:

  • next year you aren't going to St Brutus you are going to St Lovely

  • St Lovely is better because <child accepting reason like bigger playground, or craft after school club or nicer walk> and we think the teaching is better and you will be happier

  • Here's some pictures

  • You'll still be able to see Fred & George sometimes

  • We can talk more later if you want

  • Would you like a biscuit go bounce on the trampoline

Make getting the uniform fun. Visit the outside of the new school. Make it clear you have decided as you are the adult, it isn't up for discussion, but answer his questions.

Are you moving him because you’re unhappy with the school or you’re moving away?

I agree with Teendivided’s suggestions.

Does he know any children who go to the new school? You could arrange some play dates with them over the summer.
