Number recognition

Hi all. Just wondering if anyone has been in the same position. My 5yr old really struggles with number recognition. We do ‘number of the day’ with her involving writing the number down and watching YouTube songs. The next day she won’t remember it. It doesn’t help that she has a twin who finds numbers easy. Does anyone know of any alternative ways of teaching numbers? Or any advice/techniques that have worked? Thanks so much.

What’s her reading like? Recognising digits is more akin to phonics than maths.

if you ask her to bring you 5 flowers, for example, can she do that? What about 1 more and 1 less than?

Does she recognise any digits? If you gave her digit cards for 1-5 could she match the correct quantity to any of the digit cards? Could she put them in order?

Do you have Numicon? If not I recommend you get a first Numicon at home set and do the activities in the accompanying booklet.

Above all, don’t panic. Being able to accurately count out quantities (with 1:1 correspondence) is far more use than being able to read numbers.

Is your 5-year-old a summer born that has deferred entry and will start in Reception this coming September, or are you home schooling, or is your DD coming to the end of Reception?

Have you tried watching the first series of the numberblocks? It worked well with my daughter as it gives each number a personality/character so it's easier to remember. Also the website has some fun recognition games.
