My son got a maths score of 98 and 96+ is greater depth. Yet the outcome is achieved standard. Is this correct.

Yes, they only do achieved or not achieved in SATS

KarmaComma · 15/07/2022 16:56

Only grades are achieved or not achieved.

iwantedtobethea · 15/07/2022 17:23

If you look at the scaled score of 111 it is in the higher side of the broad average range of 85 to 115. He's doing just fine and a great indicator that he'll be just fine when doing GCSE maths Smile

The scaled scores range from 80 to 120. 100 is the boundary for meeting the age-related expectations and 110 is the boundary for working at greater depth within the expectations.

Your son has achieved greater depth, yes. Most schools report this as such so parents can fully understand it but others choose to stick to the wording of the reporting guidance and only state whether the standard has been met or not. Originally, when the guidance was written, the greater depth boundary was unknown and was potentially going to be subject to change, but it has since been set at 110 consistently for the last 7 years.

My DD's school confirmed the following when issuing the SATS results:

"For each SATs Test, your child will also have been given a scaled score, which can tell you how far above or below the Y6 expected standard they are working. A scaled score of 100 means that your child is working precisely at the Expected Standard; a score below 100 indicates that they need continued support,
and a score of above 110 suggests that they are working at a higher level than expected for their age - schools call this Greater Depth
The lowest scaled score they could achieve was 80, the highest was 120. So, for example, if your child received a scaled score of 102 it would suggest that they are working a little above average; if they received one of 118 it would tell you that they are working exceptionally above the average.

Your school isn't entire correct: it's not a comparison to average. Most children score above 100 (for example, this year 74% of children has scaled scores above 100 in reading). Instead, it's a comparison to the established expectations of a child of that age. A child could be above those expectations but still below where the average child would be.

OopsTooLate · 15/07/2022 19:14

This year's average scaled scores are 105 for reading, 105 for GPS, 104 for maths

Just the level - so not at expected, at expected, greater depth etc, but no raw scores

Remmy123 · 16/07/2022 07:15

Our school says 98 would be below expected.

cliffdiver · 16/07/2022 07:26

Our school says 98 would be below expected.

As a scaled score.

OP's DS scaled score was 111.

KarrotKake · 16/07/2022 07:27

It's 98 as a raw score, scaling to 111 if I've read the attachmetcirectlt, Remmy.

LetItGoToRuin · 18/07/2022 11:22

The raw score was out of 110 for maths (70 for SPAG and 50 for English).

The OP's DS got 98/100 for maths, which gives a scaled score of 111.

Here's a link to the raw/scaled score mappings for KS2 SATs for 2022:
