Amber heat warning for Monday

Hi all

I just wondered what do your schools usually do when we have a heatwave?

My son is due to do PE on Monday and I have emailed the school but had no reply so far.

We just had our first experience of sports day on Friday and I felt ill after being on the school field all day. There is hardly any shade for the kids up there.

Many thanks

I work in a school and we spent some of the lunchtime play in the classroom yesterday because of the heat and not everyone was wearing sun cream.

Schools usually cancel sportsday if its too hot.

Ours didn't... They never seem to from the years before covid I saw the parents coming out burnt to a crisp...

DD’s school cancelled sports day and moved it to the following week - they always send out two dates, one planned and one back up, in case of rain or extreme heat.

For playtime, they have awnings and the HT is out there making them stay in the shade at break. At lunch they do ‘hot play’ which is the same as wet play - so crafts and other activities in their classrooms.

Both mine have sports day today and I’ve kept them both off. They’ve been in the jacuzzi all day.

I don't expect the school have made specific plans for PE next week yet. If the weather is as hot as is being predicted, then likely they will have a back up plan e.g. a calm lesson in the hall. Sports day is different in that it's a one off planned event.

Our sports day was cancelled yesterday. Today they had an extra play time as it was cloudy in case they have to be kept in later in the week.

Thanks for the answers. Waiting to see if the school announces anything on Friday with regards to the heatwave. It's now been extended to Monday and Tuesdays here in the SE. 31 Monday and 34 Tuesday if they are right

I work in a school. We had a message today from the council announcing a level 3 heat alert for Monday and Tuesday, so the head has cancelled a beach trip, limited the amount of people in the hall for the leaver's service, moved the talent show, said no outside PE and issued reminders about water, suncream, staying the in the shade and opening windows/closing blinds.

BlueChampagne · 15/07/2022 11:57

Our forecast has gone up to 39. My kids are both at secondary now, and I've just had an email to say they will be finishing at lunchtime for the last few days of term, with some extra work to complete at home.

Sports day has been moved, uniform been scrapped and they've been told to wear what they feel most comfortable in and said if they can't keep the classrooms cool the kids may get sent home. So we'll see!
