Great pre-prep schools in Clapham?

We come across a beautiful house in Clapham and wonder if there are great preprep schools for boys in Clapham. We did some homework for boys preprep in northwest London but we are not familiar with the options in Clapham. Alternatively, is it realistic to commute to sloan square for schools at all? (30mins by Tube or bus).

In Clapham I'd be looking at Thomas’s and possibly Eaton House - why would you commute to Sloane Sq?

You are spoilt for choice - Thomas's Battersea or Clapham, Broomwood, Newton Prep, Eaton House.

SquirmOfEels · 12/04/2022 18:56

Do you mean Clapham North, Old Town or South? Or one of the bits of Battersea which is sometimes mislabelled as Clapham? It probably won't make that much difference as there are so many good schools close by, but I was just wondering

Best way to Sloane Square from Clapham is the 137 bus (passes Clapham Common tube station) but it can take ages to get over Chelsea Bridge at peak times

And what sorts of things do you value most on a school?

many thanks, Legoninjago1, londonmummy1966, and SquirmOfEels. Well noted on Thomas' and Eaton House. I was thinking about the Eaton House Belgravia. Any difference between Eaton House Belgravia vs The Manor? Major differences between Eaton House, Thomas', and Newton Prep please? (sorry I have just started my school research so quite a lot to catch up)
For pre-prep, we would like to have a nurturing school with great pastoral care with decent academic that nurtures curiocity. Whether we will choose a competitive or "chill" one will very much depends on my son's personality, preferences. But we would like to the have the options.

The house is close to Clapham North (sort of between Clapham north and Brixton). Not the most desirable spots in Clapham (such as between the commons and the old town). Would you consider it a safe area for family and young kids?
Thanks so much for your feedback.

The commute! It'll not be fun doing that extra bit that takes you over the river through heavy traffic, so you have to leave ridiculously early and feel your heart sink as the bus takes you more or less past The Manor and you've another 30 mins on it. Also, if you like the school and stay put then he could stay on until 11/13

@SupermamaV - I'll PM you but given where you are you could also look at Dulwich as a lot of the mamas in that area do the school run so it is usually possible to share.

Paris14eme · 13/04/2022 18:55

My sons loved Eaton House The Manor.

KingscoteStaff · 13/04/2022 20:27

Definitely look at Newton Prep - something very special there.

SupermamaV · 13/04/2022 21:20

SquirmOfEels thank you! DD is our first so we haven’t done school runs and may have underestimated the work required. If no major difference between the two sites, the manor is def closer (10mins bus ride).
londonmummy1966, that would be much appreciated. Thank you! I have inky registered our son at a few schools in the west north London area (where we have been looking for a house and have a few friends closeby). So haven’t done work in Dulwich or Clapham area.
Paris14eme Do you mind me reach out to get your feedback please? KingscoteStaff, thank you! I will check it out!

We have a home in Putney, and are considering move out to Surrey for a larger family home. Presently both working as expats for the next year or so.

We have one son due 2 Dec 2022 and intend to put him in the best chance possible of getting into the top independent schools in London (St Paul‘s, Latymer, Westminster, etc).

I understand that much depends on our son‘s personality and what fits him, but at the outset, would be great if we could get some advice on the best routes looking at pre-prep, prep and onwards…

How do we find this out?! How do we find out where feeds where?

We can luckily afford private all the way if pressed, but honestly only care about the secondary school.

Thank you very much in advance!

If you are heading toward Surrey you need somewhere like The Rowans in Wimbledon or Wimbledon common prep school - but entry to the schools you list 7 years from now will be very much down to the personality of the dc as all schools move to opening up entry to all areas of society so a bright ds in a state primary school with parental involvement will have the same chance of entry.

zippideedoodaa · 18/09/2022 12:22

If you're moving to Surrey you really don't want to send him to any of those schools- Kings Wimbledon at a push but otherwise it's just too long a journey and none of his friends would live anywhere near.

hockeygrass · 18/09/2022 14:56

Yes agree with @zippideedoodaa , you need to stay on the tube network for those secondaries as the pupil catchment is all over London or sw London for Latymer.
