My ds wrote us a note the other night and this is pretty good writing for him. I just wondered if most children have terrible spelling at this age. He always spells how he sounds it.

Ay Fiyol poliy plees send bac from ----

hir is a pees of ptyp to wrayt bak

I have just spent ages teaching him the difference between b and d so am pleased they are all the right way around.

He also gets muddled writing numbers after 10 her tends to reverse them ie 12 he writes 21

Will this all just get better as he gets older?

Thanks

Just read through some higher posts - girls DEFINITELY go faster than boys - dd is in reception and her writing though still very 'emergent' is way ahead of ds1 at that stage, despite being an August girl.

Thanks Blu for sharing about your ds with me. I'll stop worrying and see how we go. I guess I just needed to know that he isn't the only child struggling with the writing/reading thing.

this has some symptoms of dyslexia if that's what you're worrying about.

My DS has just turned 7 and in my opinion his writng ought to be much neater by now.

He also spells some words how they sound for example he would spell could as cud.

He doesn't seem to use what he has been taught properly and would rather keep looking for me to prompt him all of the time.

I do however think that alot of it is down to laziness and a cannot be bothered with writing thing.

He loves reading and his reading skills have come on tremendously.

His writing goes up and down big then small and he needs constant reminders to keep within the lines.

He can also get into awful strops when trying to write.
