Apostrophes for contraction - Year 2

We are homeschooling this week due to us all having Covid and a part of the work set by the teacher is apostrophes for contraction i.e I am = I’m, we are = we’re; do not = don’t, etc.

This is the first that I’ve seen of the class covering this and I’m finding DS(7) gets some of the words, but I can tell that most of these are just going over his head. There is two YouTube clips and plenty of examples given by the teacher, but I wondered if anyone knows of a simpler way for me (as a non-teacher!) to help make this concept clearer to him please? Any other YouTube clips, worksheets or reading programmes that cover this?

He is behind in his reading anyway which won’t be helping but I’d like to see what I can do to help him understand.

I am not a teacher but I think with DCs I used magnetic letters that we had in but you could write large letters on some paper cut them into squares, one letter per square.

We started with the long word and got them to remove letters until they had the same letters as the contraction and then they would put in the apostrophe.

Therefore I had I AM and I'M put the long word under the short word and get them to remove the letter/s. You can then see the direct correlation between the letters that remain as you line them up one above the other.

Does that help?

I agree, writing the words on card and then cutting the letters out that are to be discarded can be really useful. It can help to think of the apostrophe as a little arrow, pointing at the place where the letters have been taken out.
