I'm looking for recommendations for picture books that can be used to start discussions about more serious matters (death, racism, etc...)

I can't think of anything offhand, but you could try posting in the Children's Books topic as well.

If you search for ‘dive in education’ on Facebook then you can see all sorts of recommended books for children of all ages based on issues around race and inclusion.
