RGS Guildford prep 7+ assessment

Hi,

Is anyone able to give any info about the best resources to use to prepare for the assessment day in November 2022? DC would be coming from state primary. Is preparation or tutoring necessary or is the primary school likely to teach enough/in sufficient depth to mean it isn’t? If we didn’t tutor, would DC be mainly up against boys who were tutored?

Any insights would be most welcome.

Thanks.

@ sorry do your mean Guildford High school for girls that has an entry point at age 7 or the boys school RGS that starts at age 11?

No such school in Guildford.

Do you mean Lanesborough?

Hi - I mean the school that was Lanesborough but has become the prep of Guildford Grammar.

Maybe ask MN to change the title to
Royal Grammar School Guildford Prep 7+

We've nipped on now to edit that title for you OP. Hope that helps avoid any more confusion. Flowers

I don’t but am also interested! I couldn’t find in their webpage anything about entry at 11 - do all the boys sit the exam or automatic entry?

We just got an offer from RGS Prep. Anyone else received any offers? DS has written a couple of others as well, so will wait to see which one we choose.

My DC didn’t sit the assessment in the end. Well done.

Thanks. We are from a state primary too and thought I can check if we know other families who are choosing the school.

Ooh, what entry? We have 4+ assessment this weekend for reception - I’m moderately concerned my DS will throw a wobbly and just refuse to go off somewhere strange… we’ll see! We have a place at Hoe Bridge which we really love anyway!

We applied for Sep 2025 year 4 entry today and to my surprise got called for ad hoc assessment on Monday (we were told previously there is no space in the current year so I didn’t expect to apply and get called for assessment at such short notice) I’m a little worried DS hasn’t done any prep (coming from state school ) as we have decided to try to get him very last minute because his older brother is going to RGS for year 7 in Sep. Any advice on last min prep or what to expect without much prep is much appreciated.

We visited for our DS thinking about 7+ but in the end applied somewhere nearer. We were also short notice for that one so no time for preparation and I would think they would appreciate that. I'm sure they can tell underlying intelligence from conversations and I expect they will do some online maths and english testing. I would just get him ready to talk about his interests eg book he's reading, sport he likes, hobbies such as music/chess/drama. Get him used to answering questions with more than yes/no and some relevant detail without waffling too long! Good luck.

Wouldn't be surprised, they're struggling for kids. I've heard they've even started advertising for girls to come along to some stay and play type events. With boys birth rates having gone down in recent years, and decent competition from co-ed options like churchers, st John's and other preps, it must be getting hard to recruit.

Alongside a similar post on here for RGS 'senors' and a recent parent survey. I wouldn't be surprised if RGS goes co-ed, especially in the prep, pretty soon. For such a renowned and esteemed school, that reality would strike at 'troubles in the waters' and 'buyer beware'.
