Hello, I am looking at schools for my two boys. What are people’s thoughts on Caterham and Hazlewood. Is there any other schools which we should be considering ? Thanks 😊

Where would they be going for secondary? Caterham prep is relatively small, c40 pupils per year, but most progress to the senior at 11. Hazelwood goes up to 13 and has a wider range of secondary destinations. Other independents in the area include Warlingham Park, Oakhurst Grange, Essendene Lodge, Hawthorns, Cumnor house, Reigate St Marys, Micklefield - largely depending where you live and ease of access for school runs.

They’re both quality preps. Visit both, speak to head/senior leaders and see how you feel. My DC go to Hazelwood and I’m very happy with it…varied curriculum, engaged teachers and kids all seem so happy to go to school. If there isn’t much in it, for primary age, I’d be inclined to choose base on proximity/school run and close to where their school friends will live.

Hello apologies for the late response I don’t seem to get notified that someone has replied 🤷🏼‍♀️. Thank you for your advice we have now visited both schools and think the decisions even trickier. Our eldest is only 2 so it’s tricky to know which secondary we’d like for him. I know caterham senior is a very good school so it would be nice to have him at the prep, but at his age it’s very difficult to know if that senior school would suit him. We are also looking at hawthorns which I expect will confuse me even more !

The Hawthorns is wonderful. They send a lot of children to Caterham at 11+ and 13+ , but focus on finding the right senior school for each individual child. It’s tricky to know whether Caterham will be the best fit for senior if your DS is only 2. Hawthorns get great results and have fantastic facilities (I’ve heard Caterham Prep often miss out on using the facilities as the senior school takes priority). My two love it there, and we’ve been really pleased with it. It’s definitely worth a visit and a meeting with the Head.
