Primary school in Sutton->Secondary Grammar

Dear Fellow Mum, need a little help with deciding if we are going in the right direction regarding our DS education.

We are at present living in Feltham and he is going to a state school Y2. We appeared for 7+ exams but couldn't crack it, though he scored a place at The Mall School.

Our plan is to make him sit for 11+ Grammar School exams later on and are hoping he will be able to get a place. With that in mind, we are planning to move Sutton as it falls in 3 Grammars catchment.

For his Primary education, we feel that Independent prep school will help him grow better compared to state schools and the only good Independent I could find in Sutton that fulfils our requirement is Homefield Prep.

Does any of you have any experience with Homefield Prep? Are we making the right decision to go for Homefield Prep? Any comparison between The Mall School and Homefield prep, Sutton...
Your feedback will be really helpful?

?

@ChristopherTracy Ahh, if that happens it will be terrible , so keeping my fingers crossed. I visited HF last week and there was expansion work going on and I was informed that that have removed Nursery, so now its Reception - Year 8.

I didnt actually think you could get into Tiffin from Sutton. Is your house within the inner priority area?

BumbledBee · 11/01/2022 15:34
@karmi2010 Oh yes, I did forget about Wallington. So, yes having 4 Grammars in Catchment gives a good chance to my DS to get into at least one of them.

Thanks for sharing the recommendations for state primaries in Carshalton. I liked that area very much but we purposely decided to stay close to Sutton than Carshalton as it was on the boundary of Tiffin's and we didn't want to lose it.

If you do have any recco for Primaries close to West Sutton, please share.
I can highly recommend Cheam Park Farm. DD is now at Wilson's and DD will be starting Nonsuch this September. I also have one due to start nursery this September!
Others nearby with good reputations: Cheam Fields, Westbourne.
Manor Park is close to Sutton Grammar.

BumbledBee · 11/01/2022 15:35

Sorry, DS is at Wilson's ☺️

LearnToBeMum · 11/01/2022 16:28

@ChristopherTracy The area we are targeting is within 10 Km radius (inner circle) for Tiffins but I will cross check that.

We are yet to finalize the house, still in the process of viewing the properties.

@BumbledBee Wow.. thats awesome to know that. Congratulations for your kids success in Secondary schools.

I have also heard good things about Cheam Farm Park. Did your kids went to this one?

My younger DS will start nursery in Sep so will you suggest Cheam Farm park or Westbourne..

Also, will really appreciate if you can guide with the private tuitions that you took for your DS to help him with his Grammar prep.

Yes, both Cheam Park Farm. I prepped them myself in Year 5. Two mocks each were were helpful too.

BumbledBee · 11/01/2022 16:41

We have applied to Cheam Park Farm nursery but you do need to live very close to get a nursery place, unless higher criteria applies. Larger intake for reception though.

I don't have first-hand experience of Westbourne, but it is supposed to be a good school in the West Sutton area.

LearnToBeMum · 11/01/2022 17:15

@BumbledBee Thats fabulous that you prepped them yourself. Really kudos to you for doing this successfully, truly inspiring.

Definitely, will decide that after we finalize the house. Thanks for your inputs. :)

Make sure you check the admissions criteria for the schools you are interested in, "catchment" is not really a thing for many places at Sutton grammars - most children are admitted purely based on their score in the exam, and even being in catchment doesn't gain much advantage necessarily.

LearnToBeMum · 13/01/2022 23:26

@RueDeWakening I agree the score will be the deciding factor but after that step Sutton/Wallington especially have catchment to pick the students and have a priority living there.

Catchment is only advantage when you have a good score, that's what I learnt after some research.

Any Good Experiences at City of London Freemen’s? We have an offer for our daughter, was our first choice. Rethinking due to the negative feedback.

My DS2 is at a Sutton grammar. Many of his classmates went to Homefield. The school itself boasts of how many of its pupils pass the grammar school tests. There’s a clear pathway and expectation on the part of many parents sending their kids there.
