How much homework for year 3?

Should year 3 kids expect to get homework? Currently my DS receives no homework and there is no expectation to receive any it seems.

Is this normal? I don't have much to reference as he is my eldest, all I have to go on is a friends child in private school in year 2 who gets 5-10 pieces a week and they spend every Sunday going through that.

My Y3 currently gets spellings and maths homework every week, and he needs to read at least four times a week. They're also prompted to do TT Rockstars several times a week too.

Spellings (10-12 words) given on Monday tested on Friday in class.
Maths, 1-2 pages of a Letts book.
English, same as maths
TT Rockstars.
Reading minimum 4 times a week or miss out on golden time.

This is every week and has been since sept y1. Slightly less in reception. Bog standard "good" primary.

Reading everyday
Spelling tests
Times tables

High performing state school. No formal homework as such. List of optional stuff and monitored web sites eg TTR and manga high with challenged on. Reading books to read. Kids encouraged to do extra curricular stuff and just play

I quite like that approach but there isn't even monitored websites. Do you get to know what the kids are doing on a weekly basis or do the teachers tell you what the kids will be learning in the next term?

School is like a black hole - not sure what they are teaching. All the progress I know is that he is on reading band 15 - is that about right for year 3?

We have various like TTR, manga high, spelling shed, Oxford owls, reading plus etc. All track how much time they have done & scores etc.
It was one wag schools invested through Covid catch up finding

We don't do spelling tests as they are rote learning and same kids will just struggle each week. Spelling aps teach them the rules & patterns of spelling. All are expected to read 10 min every day of anything

WholeClassKeptIn · 16/11/2021 20:07

Spelling weekly, TTR weekly, my maths weekly. And penalties if not done :( which I don't like.

WholeClassKeptIn · 16/11/2021 20:08
