It's probably a dumb question but I'm exhausted after a house move and birth during the summer plus some other issues so please forgive me... DS has started in Y1 at his new school this Monday. Last week I've asked the school to put me in touch with the class reps so they could add me to a whatsup or FB group as at the moment I need to be reminded about PE days etc. Haven't heard anything from the reps while the school told me that they have notified the reps. Funnily enough, I haven't met a single parent during the drop off/pick up sessions. I'm not sure how it's possible while other classes have long queues in the morning and the afternoon while I'm the only mum from our class along with another father who seems to be on the phone all the time and I feel awkward talking to him. I'm wondering whether I'm going mad because of the mess and the sleepless nights but I'm worried I might miss some important announcements etc... what sort of actions shall I take? Or would you recommend just letting it go as it's only a Y1 after all?

@Heathofhares you are right, I'm going to do that now

@VHLV actually - I've just remembered that although our WhatsApp groups are not run through the school, I do remember ticking a form giving consent to be contacted by the schools general PTA and supplying my email address for that.

As pp said I am sure you want to meet other parents but that will probably happen when your dc makes friends and wants playdates

We have whatsapps but they are 100% unofficial. In one class most but not all the parents are on it. On the other there's about 7 mums. I think there are others but the various cliques don't seem to talk to each other much, at least not on whatsapp.

Is there a nearby park where the local kids go? I'd take your kid along and when she goes to play with a classmate introduce yourself and get them to add you to the class whatsapp group. Failing that join an after school activity or two.

@niki26 oh great news, so I'm not going mad after all. The headteacher did ask us to tick some boxes and specifically mentioned whatsup. My husband was there too and he's positive the headteacher said "whatsup"

@VHLV ours is all emails from the PTA rather than a WhatsApp group but yes, I did have to give my email address - I gave my husband's email address too and it's the only correspondence he gets as he isn't signed up for the WhatsApp stuff!

VHLV · 30/09/2021 09:52

@niki26 I would be happy with emails too since a whatsup groups seem to be hit and miss... certainly don't want a miss :)

School WhatsApp are toxic sometimes, better off out.
Check with the teacher what the official communications are and use those. Much less stress.

Mol1628 · 30/09/2021 09:58

I agree to try stay away from school whatsapp etc. Just phone the school if you have any questions.

VHLV · 30/09/2021 09:59

Oh how lucky we were with the previous school's whatsup! Haven't even realise that before this post.. thank you all for your advice, I've contacted the school already x

We moved our childrens school and there isn't any WhatsApp groups or class reps. All info comes through on parent mail and DoJo.

At The last school the parents set up WhatsApp groups, but the communication from the previous school was appalling.

VHLV · 30/09/2021 23:09

Just an update: the school has passed my details to the school rep who has contacted me quite quickly. The school itself is communicating through the tapestry app.
