Trying to ascertain DS's reading level, but according to the guide on the Oxford website there are two purple level 11's?

Can anyone clarify?

I'm confused? (It doesn't take much!)

Isn’t it showing that levels 8-12 could be achieved in either Y2 or Y3?

NatashaRf · 07/09/2021 16:20

I think the 11 is the same regardless of school year.

It's just showing you which bands cover which years.

PeonyTime · 07/09/2021 17:05

There are 2 purples in Y2, because oxford levels are different to book bands.

Purple appears again in y3, as its typical yo have kids reading purple in both years.

CattyMcNips · 07/09/2021 17:59

So the purple in y2 is the same as the purple in y3? So if they complete purple in y2 they will carry on up the levels rather than going back to purple?

Yes.

I find it very confusing. DS is on Gold books. His current one is book band 9 Gold and Oxford level 9 (as shown against year 2). But he’d have to jump up four book band levels to reach the same Oxford level 9 that appears in Year 3????

PeonyTime · 07/09/2021 19:49

No, view it as different years, not a continuous table.
Typical reading levels in Y2 go from 7 to 12.
Typical reading levels in Y3 go from 8 to 14
A child already on, say, level 10 in Y2 would jump to level 10 in Y3

The brown book band level is not the same as the reading tree. The cut at year 3, is because of start of ks2, but book band levels haven't been adjusted, maybe because they are broader

I hope no one minds me resurrecting this thread, but I think my confusion is similar to the OP.

My daughter finished Y2 on either lime or lime+ (not sure which it was, but level 11/12 anyway). She's just been congratulated in Y3 for going onto brown (level 8-11). I'm very confused Blush Is this just a sideways move or what? The note from the teacher sounded as if it was good progress Confused

Legomania · 04/01/2022 19:04

I think the scales are inconsistent as the book band scale doesn't show any overlaps by year group, whereas the Oxford scale does?

BendingSpoons · 04/01/2022 19:09

That chart is trying to compare to schemes and is confusing! I would ignore the Oxford middle column and just look at the right. She has moved from lime to brown, which is the next level up. So that does show good progress.

This image shows lime as level 11 and brown as 12.
