This came up on my feed and I thought it might interest people here.

Kindergarten is age 4-5

I've noticed the sexism (what about mum's name?) but it's interesting what knowledge was considered necessary for starting first grade.

"I can do what the music tells me" I wonder what that was?

I like the idea of the personal habits section. Lord knows some of my older classes try to get away with carrying chairs the wrong way Hmm

MissyB1 · 21/07/2021 16:41

Expectations were higher back then by the looks of things.

Ainesskirt · 21/07/2021 18:01

I thought the opposite MissyB1. My DC who are now 8 and 12 were aged 4 for all of their reception year. They were expected to be able to do more than that by the June. I thought the expectations sounded more rounded and achievable back then. My DC with SEN did not meet most of the age related expectations for 2014, but could do everything on the 1954 list apart from tie his shoe laces.

Sprogonthetyne · 21/07/2021 18:58

With the exception of shoelaces, that seems to be about level they aim for at my DS's school attached nursery, which is age 3-4.

Its not Uk , its from US (kindergarten and spelling of colour)so age is 5-6 not 4 to 5

Terrazzo · 21/07/2021 19:51

That's adorable. So simple!

ChnandlerBong · 22/07/2021 15:02

huge focus on doing everything 'nicely'?!

garlictwist · 22/07/2021 17:07

It's very...unambitious, imho. Isn't kindergarten age 5-6? I'd have thought that children of that age could do more.

FelicityBob · 22/07/2021 17:11

What are wraps?

Fangsalot89 · 22/07/2021 17:13

Big fan of how simplistic this seems to be. From a teachers point of view this style of report is a wet dream 🤣

StarryStarrySocks · 22/07/2021 17:15

"I can listen nicely to records" Grin

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 22/07/2021 17:16

Art overalls?

It is funny how expectations change. We teach our Cubs (8-10yos) shoelace tying if they don't know it. Many have no shoes with laces.

Was the knowing the right hand knowing which hand they should write with? Or just knowing left and right...

user1471530109 · 22/07/2021 17:21

Some of my secondary age kids can't tell me their address when writing a letter for example...I also think many 5 year olds can't tie their laces.

TotorosCatBus · 22/07/2021 18:42

@FelicityBob

What are wraps?
I think coat, gloves and scarves? Stuff you wear to wrap up and keep warm perhaps

A few things on there would be considered ambitious these days.

I wonder if the expectation was that an average child would achieve all those things

And I presume “coming to school clean” would have rather more to do with the parent than the child! There’s quite a lot of prejudices in there.

This is for a 5 to 6 year old . Op has got it wrong. Kindergarten USA go up to 7

What is missing is things like:

  • I can ask questions
  • I can make deductions
  • I can think of ways to try out new ideas
  • I can use a computer
  • I understand that people have different cultures and beliefs and I respect that
  • I understand about eating healthily

Young children can learn things, if you focus on them. We focus on different things these days I think.
