How on earth to improve spelling?

DC6 does very well on spelling tests but asides that they are pretty consistently spelling things phonetically.

Any workbooks suggestions to improve spellings? How do you do it at home?

How is their reading? Doing a good amount of reading will definitely help them by getting used to how words should look 'in the wild' rather than just on spelling.

DS has become a really good speller but doing the classic: look cover write check (10-15 words per week, he is 7) but tests knowledge by then writing the words in a sentence or story, as opposed to just writing the words without context. Also learns them in sets.. e.g ight words etc
