My nearly 7yo DD1 has just started joined up writing. She excels in almost everything, and is top of her class in main subjects (reading & maths). However, she wasn't able to really write particularly clearly until the summer. Her class has a special teacher in for 1 hour a week to teach her class to join up their letters. DD1 is now so obsessed with joining her words correctly that she is forgetting her spelling and comprehension and her work is once again particularly messy and almost illegible. She has a book every evening which comes with a work sheet she has to fill in, this was fine while she was printing her words, but now it can take up to an hour to complete 6 questions. Is this normal, am I expecting too much of her? Had to beg her to go to bed last night after 8 o'clock, 'cos she wanted to keep on practising her writing. Teacher has asked that I make sure she only does joined up writing, but others in class don't have to.
