Hey everyone.

Son in primary school, he has been accepted into the secondary school. If I chose to take him out of primary school now to home school him until September, will he lose his secondary school place? Can I take hun out without any affects to secondary?

Many thanks

I think you can (no exert though) but you would need to be explicit you are planning for him to return to formal schooling in September. @prh47bridge will know for sure I would expect.

I would question why you would want to though?

I know our local primary is continuing to fill in gaps of knowledge whilst simultaneously starting transition skills with its year 6s. I would have thought that settling in secondary would be easier if they have continued in primary up until end July.

Plus if you take him out, presumably the primary will have no responsibility to liaise with secondary about him, such as academic ability, who he gets on with etc. This info is used to put the children into tutor groups and sometimes initial sets.

Yes, you can de-register him from primary school with no implications for his place at secondary school.

There's only a few weeks left of Primary and I think unless there are huge safety/mental health concerns it would be a bit counter productive. All the fun year 6 things start to happen around now and also transition days/weeks at secondary school.

Does he not want to finish school with his friends? Seems a shame to leave now and miss out in end of primary celebrations. Has he not had enough time on his own? That’s poor prep for secondary school in my view.

No, he will not lose his place at secondary school just because you take him out of primary school. There are only three reasons an offer can be withdrawn. Choosing to home educate your child for the last few weeks of primary school is not one of them.
