School governor interview

I am going to be interviewing soon for a school governor position at a local primary school and I wonder if anyone can offer me some guidance on what might be asked, and in turn, what I should be asking the school? I'd be grateful to hear from anyone who has gone through this process before. Thank you.

They will probably ask what skills you have that are relevant to the board - which sounds silly but you could have a look at the governors competancy framework or the NGA website to get a feel for iwhat governors do (dont be put off - its better than the framework sounds). A big area is understanding difference between strategic and operational.

What is it that appeals to you?

They will also be keen to know that you have the time and energy to commit to the role and to training. Not just attending evening meetings, but school monitoring visits (whether virtual or in person).

In turn you could ask about their committee structures, practical things about when meetings are (unless you've already had this in a prospective governor pack), if/how you will be mentored/supported as a new governor.

It should be very much a two-way interview, so you can be confident it's the thing for you. As with any recruitment, it takes time and effort to get and train new governors and everyone will be keen for you to stay the distance. Don't forget they (we) are all volunteers.

An interview? That's very formal for school governor! For me it was more of a two way chat, working out what they needed and what experience I could bring to that. Very informal, I certainly didn't research the school. The whole role of being a school governor is questioning and challenging so I'm not sure it's a good start if you're asking for help on what to ask! What do you want to ask?
