Hi, can any parents recommend some good private prep schools in Sale / Altrincham ?

Thanks in advance.

Do you want coed or single sex?

Jeekeecee · 10/05/2021 07:01

Both can do, thanks

Loreto is the only one I know of but I'm sure there's more. I know of a few for boys but only Loreto that's girls.

My friends have daughters at Bowdon Prep and like it. We were thinking about sending DD2 to Forest Prep in Timperley (they have an open day coming up soon). We were impressed when we visited a couple of years ago.

Hale Prep is super popular but you'd struggle to get a place there unless you get your child signed up at 6 months old!

In addition to the above there’s Abbortsford in Urmston and Forest Park in Sale (which is different to the Forest School in Timperley) that are coed.

Hale Prep is very small. I have friends that are at Abbortsford and like it, it tends to prep for the state grammars rather than indies though so depends what you want them to go on to after prep.

Thanks for all replies.

I agree Hale prep is small, but why the school so popular?

If Loreto prep vs Bowdon prep, which one is more popular and better? I want my DD go for grammar school like AGGS / Sale grammar.

Loreto is catholic Bowden isn't. Bowden is seen as much more academic Loreto more nurturing. If it's AGGS you want I would probably say Bowden. Most girls from loreto prep go to loreto grammar (although it isn't actually a feeder for it).

Bowdon sorry-autocorrect!

Hale prep is popular because it is co-ed, as mentioned above, it is often easiest to get a place if you register at birth.

Forest is also co-ed and I think also harder to get into these days. I know of several children who have move there from other local preps and considered it myself. It seemed lovely, but I didn’t want to uproot my eldest at the time.

St Ambrose has also recently gone co-Ed. They have few girls at the moment, but I know of several starting.

Bowdon is regarded as a bit of a hot house. I’ve heard that several kids leave in juniors to go to withington, so it can be easier to get places at that stage.

Loreto has been nurturing in the past, but isn’t as great at the moment. The competition with St Ambrose may encourage them to sort things out. Their facilities aren’t great either. Also, the girls have to score higher than state school girls in Trafford to get a place at the grammar.

The prep schools in Alty are not on a par with the Manchester schools, they have fewer facilities and extra curricular.

If your going for AGGS, then Bowdon is your best option, but I would also think of a back up plan. With the exception of Wellington (which has a very small catchment), the other Alty options aren’t great.
