Primary schools in Great Malvern

Hello

Does anyone live in Great Malvern (or surrounding villages) and could give me some info on the local schools (reputation, etc.)? We’re moving to Malvern soon and I’d love some insider knowledge!

TIA

Where in Malvern are you moving?
Are you looking for reception or other years?

Hi @greengrey - thanks for your reply. We’re moving to Great Malvern. Our nearest school will be Malvern Parish but they’re full (DD is in reception currently). There are spaces at some primaries further away but I don’t know much about them (Great Malvern Primary, Grove?, St James, St Joseph) and I’d rather not be tied to doing a long school run for the next 10 years (I have two younger DSs).

Do you have any experience/knowledge of any of those primaries?

Okay so others may come along and disagree but here's my view fwiw:

Grove - meant to be good with SEN, I have a friend whose child goes there and she's happy but I'm not keen and it doesn't have a good reputation- but not a bad one either!

GM Primary - avoid!

St Joseph's - meant to be good but the Catholic thing put me off. If you don't mind that then it'd be fine.

St James Primary - good! Small classes. It was 'outstanding' forever then had a less good Ofsted a couple of years ago and they got a new head and I hear good things. It's over the other side of the hill from Great Malvern though so may be a pain to get to. This is my local school we just don't go there because DS stayed out when we moved up. We were out of catchment when we applied in reception so didn't get a place.

Wyche Primary - very good and very desirable - I know many who go here and love it and many who have tried and failed to get in!

Northleigh - avoid - it may be improving but it had a horrific Ofsted a while back and many parents moved the kids out last year. Now an academy so could be on the up.

Somers Park - big school, good reputation but also said to be more results focused than others. It's an academy and the same head is over:

Malvern Vale - new school with intake only up to year 2 so far. Sister school with Somers Park. I've heard good things. The only reason we didn't apply there is because there's no year 3!

Malvern Wells - I hear mixed but a friend moved her son there from Northleigh and really rates it.

St Matthias - avoid!

Cradley- just into Herefordshire and prob and 12 min drive but really good!

PM if you want more info Smile

@greengrey thank you so much - that’s really helpful! The house we’re buying is between Malvern Parish and Malvern Wyche schools - they’d be our preferences but both are full in reception (DD going into Y1 in September). I don’t want GMP but the others are all too far away to walk.

I’m currently weighing up sending her somewhere we don’t want or homeschooling until a place comes up (though that might be never!)
