Cheadle Hulme School entrance exams

Hi all. After a slightly strange few weeks of rushed thinking and messing about, my 2 DCs have been offered places at CHS, in infants and juniors. They currently attend a very nice state primary, but are not particularly stimulated/stretched. This is not necessarily an issue but we do have some concerns. There are many reasons why I am totally conflicted about what to do but rather than bombard people with that, can I please ask about experience of CHS entrance exams for Senior school?
One of the main reasons we are considering taking up the offers are to ensure a place at secondary as there are limited private co-Ed options near us. Is this total overkill? They are both bright although not seemingly ‘gifted’ but hard to say at their ages and I’ve not really worried about it to this point - they’re just tiny kids! So, how hard is it to get into CHS from state primary? Any thoughts/experience v helpful, thank you. I’d really appreciate specific local experience. I’ve agonised over the more holistic arguments around state versus primary so now looking for real world experiences if possible. Thanks!

I know plenty of people that failed Trafford grammar exams or MGS (boys) that have passed and gone to CHS from state primaries. Bright kids but not exceptionally high performers.

I would be very cautious about sending your children to CHS senior school

@Anwenandtheicecreambaby please would you elaborate? We are considering the senior school for our children (not even in primary yet but looking ahead)

I know plenty who are happy there. Great sports facilities. I do know someone who left also. But overall most seem very happy.

CH has a lovely reputation and former pupils seem to be overwhelmingly positive about. It doesn’t have the same reputation for academic rigour as MGS or Withington (private) or Alty Boys/Girls (state/grammar) at secondary school level. The grammar school entrance exams are very much on the 11-plus model whereas the others (CHS included operate on a hybrid of assessment days plus entrance exam). The private schools do offer transitions between junior and senior schools, but also say it’s not automatic and it does depend on the individual child’s performance & potential.
However, it’s extremely rare that the transition isn’t honoured.
You may want to look at the other school options and what each of them offers, going forward. At the end of the day it’s about finding the best fit for your DC and/or your budget.
