Year 1 - how much PE?

DD1 has just mentioned in passing that she is only getting one PE session a week now that she is in Year 1. Last year they had at least three.

I'm shocked to find that it is so little - just wondering if this is normal, before I decide whether to express any concerns.

If it is the norm, it will change my attitude towards whether she can join in any of the lunchtime clubs, which are all rather sedentary :-( She needs to get out there and run around!

Children are entitled to 2 hours a week of P.E. I cannot swear that this is a national requirement but it definately is within the LEA that I teach.

However, that does not mean they must have 2 hour lessons of P.E. Organised lunchtime activities could make up part of the 2 hours. Also activities such as 'wake and shake' - 15 minutes of exercise first thing in a morning - all contribute to their 2 hours a week.

In a private school, every day; in a state school twice a week.

both mine (yr1 and 3) within school do it twice a week

once outside, once inside where they just change their shoes (? whatever that means).

So I take that to mean only one session where they are really running around.

Two 40 minute PE sessions and three 'Take Ten' aerobic sessions in the classroom per week.

Three PE sessions a week and a Take 10 session every day in our school. Two hours a week is the minimum they should be getting - our children get more.

Thanks all. I didn't know about the two hour thing. She says that one of her teachers (they job-share) "doesn't do PE", but I wonder if she does other active things that DD1 doesn't recognise as PE. Take Ten sounds like fun!!

In our school its once a week for approx 45 mins in the winter, when the weather is good then its approx an hr and 15 mins.

jennifersofia · 11/11/2007 15:22

We do 2x 45 min/wk, and 3x'fit in 5' sessions per week. (state)

We do 2 hour sessions a week in all years and also 15 minutes of activate every day. Primary age children are definitely entitled to 2 hours PE a week and schools not meeting that will be pulled up.

DD (Y1) has one PE lesson and one ballet lesson a week at school. No idea how long each session lasts.

They do 2 sessions (not sure how long) as DS1's school. Usually one "standard" PE - but the other sessions is often dance - thankfully DS recognises it as PE so tells me about his "PE dancing lesson"
