Hi, we are looking for private junior school for our 7 year old son (will start year 3 in September). South Manchester, Wilmslow, Cheadle Hume, Bramhall and surroundings, we are moving there so we are no limited to any specific area but definitely not further than Didsbury.
After a quick research on fb mums group we decided we are about to choose between Lady Barn House School, Greenbank Prep and Stockport Grammar. I’m thinking about King’s in Macclesfield even is a distance but I didn’t get any credible reviews.
I really appreciate your opinions, all. Any other suggestions are welcome too 🙏

Where are you moving to and what secondary do you want?

Chihuahuacat · 20/03/2021 23:23

Are you aiming for Trafford grammars or independent all the way through?

Icegarden, we want to move somewhere between wilmslow, Bramhall, cheadle, maybe didsbury. We didn’t think about secondary yet but if we decide on SGS this problem disappears

I think independent but it’s too early for me to decide now.

Same if you choose CHS - they just go straight through

If you are undecided about whether to go for the state grammars then it would be wise to consider a prep in an area that would be in catchment for those - basically altrincham/hale/sale/urmston. In the SK postcodes you have described there are no catchment grammars. Wilmslow High is the state option and well regarded but again you would need to be in catchment.

My kids go to a prep in the area you are looking but not one of the ones you asked for views on. I know people who have sent their kids to ladybarn and been happy, and others who have said it was too academically focused. The one who was happy with it has a DD who went on to SGS and a DS who went on to CHS. I know of people with kids at CHS juniors who are happy; I’m considering both CHS and SGS for mine after they finish at their prep.

If I had the cash I'd send mine to CHS or SHS from prep all through. Kings looks amazing but I'd have to move to Macclesfield really... It's nice but no desire to live there.

Thank you captainj1, I’ll consider what you said 👍

I used to work there at one point. Cant put my finger on why but I just never felt it done where I would feel at home. Yet Kings new campus is amazing
