Is anyone else's child struggling with the academic side of starting school?

DD started P1 in August - she is 5. She is happy at school and tries REALLY hard - but she's struggling. It's very frustrating reading all these threads where 4 and 5 year olds seem to "get" reading as soon as they start school. dd can barely recognise 4 of the phonic sounds she is meant to know.
"reading" is a joke - she points at the word while guessing wildly.
Anybody else in the same boat? I am lucky as at least she enjoys school - and loves doing all this extra work teh teacher has sent home for her.

little and often - when she is in the mood.
One day it will just click and you will be amazed honest
Some if not many many children are just not ready, FGS in some countries kids do not even start school until age 6 and their adult literacy is higher than the UK's

I know - it's just a bit frustrating reading about all these other kids who are sounding out words etc already - and dd is madly guessing what sound is what!
