Helping year 2 with maths

My DS's maths is prob below average. He knows bonds to 10, bonds to 20, 2 times table etc BUT often makes lots of silly mistakes and will sometimes recognise he has made a mistake but often won't. Word problems are a total nightmare: Peter has purchased 5 cars for 50p how much does 1 cost? and he will answer 55.

What can I do to help him? I have got collins year 2 workbooks to work through. I have brought numicon, cubes etc to help him as well.

I was thinking of getting mathsfactor or mathsconquer; something that explains the concepts to him and then will get him to practice.

What else can I do?

Are you using the mini on property?

Take 5 tens and show him so he can see they are 10 each

These are used in schools as a visual aid and if you look on the New Zeland website there are lesson plans to help
