9 year old hates English!

Any advice? My 9 year old son hates it. He's great at spelling, a fab reader and has extensive vocabulary but getting him to write a bloody sentence is like pulling teeth and he ends up crying!

It's so frustrating, I know he's more than capable and I have to really bite my tongue.

Talk to your son's teacher, get some tips. Maybe set up a phone or video call between them. My daughter loses interest quite often when homeschooling, but after a pep talk she usually gets motivated. She hates maths and science but is quite good at both.

It sounds like he's doing really well for his age, so I wouldn't push too hard during homeschooling. Him ending up crying won't help him develop a love for the subject! Make sure he keeps reading a lot, the writing will come in time.

I feel your pain my 9yr dd is similar, yesterday she tantrum on off for 2hrs over writing a paragraph for a story 🙄yet ask her to write a list of instructions for doing something she can whizz it off in no time. It’s just how her brain is wired - a story is subjective (in her mind she worries about how to get it ‘right’) yet a list or description of instructions is (in her mind) more black & white clearer to do. Are there other writing tasks he can do more easily and build from there? What does he like doing or interested in? Could he write a letter to a toy or a description of how to buy some sweets or describe the weather from his window?

Forgot to say she did chose to write the story in the end sitting in the garden on a frosty swing in thick winter coat using a clip board. I find she hates sitting at a table...
