In-year applications: how to find out about schools during the pandemic

We are thinking of moving closer to DH's family. It's a largish town with three primary schools within a reasonable distance. Two are massively popular and full. The third was judged inadequate two years ago and converted to an academy, last year.

As both of my children will be making an in-year application, I don't think we have a chance of getting places at the popular schools. That leaves the academy - which has not been inspected since conversion. I don't want to throw my kids' education down the toilet at a failing school (you hear tales of academy chains as asset stripping operations). Equally, it may well have improved, but how do you find out? Even getting onto school grounds is tricky these days, let alone a visit.

Any suggestions?

Ring and ask for a telephone appointment with the head. Read the report and ask questions about what has changed since then. If you can speak to parents of children at the school.
