New school mid way through year 3. Your own experiences around this age?

It looks like we’re moving and dc will be moving schools midway through year 3. I feel VERY guilty about it and nervous, too. He is quiet and shy and doesn’t find it easy to make new friends and is very settled and happy in current school.

Anyone have any experiences? Did you move at that age or your child? How was it? What can I do to make it easier (if anything!)?

DS moved after Christmas in year 3. It helped that I worked at the school that he went to and he’d visited during his half term as his half term was the week after mine and he never wanted to leave!

Starting was fine, he just went in and never looked back!

LadyCatStark that makes me feel soooo much better! I guess he was already familiar with the school? That must have helped! Did he know any kids before that first visit or were they all new to him?

I moved schools that age, it was fine. Old enough to understand what was happening. The other children were curious so all chatted to me and I made new friends pretty quickly.

That’s comforting to read, Grooticle!

Ds moved early in year 4 and it two a couple of weeks to join in properly but then he was completely fine.

He took a book in first week which may sound a bit sad but he was totally fine with it. He read at lunch then after a couple of weeks he stopped and played with the others. It was kind of a security thing for him.

Oh that’s very sweet that he took a book in! And very sensible. (The sort of thing that I would do!) I’m so glad he settled quickly.

These posts so far are calming me down a little!

DD moved in the february half term of Yr 3 and DS moved 2 weeks before lockdown in yr 2!! Both settled within a week or two. Go for it! Our children found it exciting!
