Hi

Could you tell me when they learn their times tables? Do they learn them all at once ie from 2 to 12? If not when do they learn them up to twelve?

thanks

not sure but my dd1 is in p3 and has started to learn her 2 times tables

MaureenMLove · 20/10/2007 12:37

They learn then upto x 10 these days and start in Yr 1, iirc. They start with 2 and then do 5 and 10, then all the others in between up until yr 5. I believe they shold have all the basic knowledge of them by then.

I work in a junior school, so I'm not sure about the early years,(and I've forgotten when my two did them, it was so long ago) but mostly they come up to year 3 knowing (or having been taught) 2x, 5x & 10x. At our school they do 3x & 4x in Y3,in Y4 they start to do the rest.(Some of them do it faster than this of course) Mostly they work on the fact that 4x is double 2x, 6x is double 3x etc so 7x is the only really hard one.
Our school does do 11x & 12x but I'm not sure they all do.

what the hell is wrong with my school then???

charliecat · 20/10/2007 12:43

They should know them all by the end of year 4, thats when they are 8-9 according to our school.

TrinityRhino · 20/10/2007 12:44

christ almighty
dd1 is 7 and a half and has only just brought home the 2 times table last week

chopsterHeadsOffEverybody · 20/10/2007 12:46

dd has jsut started them, year 3, all the way up to 12, but starting with the easier ones, 5, 2, 10.

MaureenMLove · 20/10/2007 12:47

That is odd TR. I'd make a note to bring it up at the next parents evening. I'm sure they've got a good reason for not doing it though.

LIZS · 20/10/2007 12:48

I think we get given x2,5,10 as a task over Year2/Year 3 summer holiday with regular tests starting in year 3 but ds is Year 5 and still revising them.

TrinityRhino · 20/10/2007 12:49

oh no don't is it really that odd??

it's not just her, it's the wholeclass that have just started. she is in the top set for maths. noone in her class has started times tables until last week

MaureenMLove · 20/10/2007 12:56

Not necessarily, your school might think its better to wait until now to start them. I just thought it sounded odd, since everyone else on here has said they all start earlier. I think DD would have been better waiting til she was older actually, it took her ages to master any of them, so maybe your school has recognised that and waits on purpose. As long as she's got them all by the end of Yr 5, she'll be fine.
