Struggling with Times Tables

My Son is struggling with times tables and I am thinking of seeking private tuition. He is 9 yrs old and wonder if people feel this is too young as my partner has looked at national stats and 1/2 of all children leaving primary school are not competent in them. QUESTION...... am I being paranoid ?

Is he struggling with all of them, or just some?

Is it the concept he can't grasp?

How is he being taught the times tables. I'm of the era where we learnt them by chanting them, even all these years later I have no trouble with multiplication.

There’s a national standard test at the end of year 4, so it’s worth working on them.

If he’s not struggling with other things then I would just concentrate on them with him yourself. Percy Parker sings the times tables is cheesy but effective. Times Tables Rock Stars did wonders for my youngest. He passed the year 4 test despite not knowing any of them at the beginning of that school year. He has autism and dyslexia and is behind in lots of areas but is good now at times tables. A lot of maths test of knowing times tables, so it’s worth the time & effort. Smile
