Just wondered what people ask at parents evening?
last year I just went with the flow & felt satisified with answers.

however Im unsure what the reading policy is in the school - is it ok to ask?

what do teachers expect parents to ask?

sounds dumb I know but I want to show that Im interested but dont want to come over too pushy

I have never been to a parents evening but am going to one soon. I have thought of the following so far and they are not in any particular order (my dd is in reception btw):

  • what does my dc enjoy at school and what does she do well
  • what does she struggle with
  • how does she deal with challenges
  • how are you challenging/developing her
  • what can we/should we be doing to help her/you/the school
  • where is she nationally
  • what is planned for next term
  • how are you grouping the children

I will raise any concerns I have etc

If you don't know something e.g what their reading policy is then I think you should definitely ask.

HTH but

am looking forward to other posters comments!

Do you (to the teacher) have any concerns?
What is your plan to deal with those concerns?
What can I do to help my child at home?

ain'tnomountain - looking forward to hearing how all that can be fitted into 10 minutes!

What does she need to improve on?

How has she settled in?

How is she socially?

You are doing a great job - thanks very much!!!

aintnomountainhighenough - I am glad you are not a parent in my class...blimely - I think that is a little full on for the 1st parent's evening. I would concentrate on how is she settling on to the routine of school!

I think my parent's evening lasted 5 minutes!

the teachers(2) gave me good feed back about settling in etc & their opinion on him in general....no concerns

I asked if there was anything I could do at home - was told hearing him read was good enough

I thanked them for letting DS come out of class once a week for speech therapy & was pleased to hear that the TA does work with him daily on top of this!

that was it.
