I just want to be organised. My daughter was born December 2018. I appreciate its early but I just like to know how everything works sooner rather than later.

You will get a letter before she is due to go with details of how to apply then you apply by the date given and you find out (on the system - details will be provided at the time) in about the April before they are due to start in the September

Applications are open sept to Jan the year before they start school.

You can find all the info on how to apply and when on you local authority's website

In the year before she goes, you may want to visit a few schools to help you make a decision

Don't rely on that - most areas don't send anything!

You will apply to school by early January 2023. Although presumably nursery much earlier than that so if there is a nursery attached to school you may have to decide a year or two earlier.

Not true for every area, we didn't get anything!

She has to start reception the september after turning 4. So if shes going to be 4 in December 2022, she will start school December 2023. So the deadline for applications will usually be January 2023.

Your DD will start school in September 2023. You will need to apply via your local authority between Sept 22 - mid-Jan 23. You will be told about the result in April 23.

Take a look on your local authority website for a page called something like 'Applying for Primary Schools in X' - this will provide the relevant info for your location. (e.g this is for the LB Sutton - here).

The LA website should also have information about applying for the Nursery class at local state schools - this is for the year before your daughter starts primary/infant school. If you want her to attend private nursery or private pre-school, you will need to contact local providers directly.

Not all regions send out letters or reminders directly to parents about applying for school - local to me it is generally via posters in GP surgeries etc.

Not all councils send out letters explaining how to apply. My council does not, they provide all details on their website. There are usually posters about school applications in public buildings like GP surgeries, libraries etc, they put reminder notices in the free council magazine, but, there’s no individual letters to parents. So don’t depend on that.

Your daughter will be due to start Reception in the school year she turns 5, so in September 2023.

You need to apply for school places during the previous school year. As I said, in my council, all details about how to apply are on their website, and they prefer applications to be made electronically.

Exact details may vary regionally.
In my county applications for primary school typically open in mid-September and close in mid-January, so for you that’s the September 2022 to mid-January 2023. But best to check exact dates for your area on your council website.

Depends on where you live.
Scotland is entirely different to all the above information. I love how people respond just assuming posters live in England.

MinaMurray · 08/09/2020 16:39

Good point @FelicityPike .

Yes I was talking about England.

Lottiebugz22 · 08/09/2020 16:56

Yes it's England thank you so much everyone!
