My 4 year old has just started primary school. We've noticed bouts of unconscious hair pulling where whilst distracted she will pull clumps of her hair out! Worried this could escalate..has anyone else seen this in their kids at school? Thanks x

Hi. I used to do it when I was about six or seven.
It's called trichotillomania.
A friend of mine did it to at a similar age, so I think that it's not uncommon.
I can't remember how or when I stopped doing it.
I hope that you get some more helpful answers here.

I didn't pull clumps though, just individual hairs. Clumps sounds a bit worrying.

The school nurses are good for this kind of thing. In my (English) county they are a centralised team now and you get to them via school receptionists. I don't know how it works elsewhere I'm afraid. But I have found them a brilliant starting point for worries like this.
