What's year 1/2 like?

Anyone know abit about mixed classes?

My DD will be in a mixed 1/2 class. She's 5.....

Do they have any toys/outdoor play in year one? Do they still learn with objects quite alot such as cubes, shapes, playdoh etc?

My friends child is at a village school and was showing me some pictures of her DD at school. She's in year 1 and was playing with Barbie's, stickle bricks etc and also outdoors on equipment. I was quite surprised to see so many toys as I've been told year one is alot more work.

Does it depend on the school? Or is learning through play still very much a part of year one? I know it won't be boring and all sitting down writing etc.

Our school Year 1 is more like Year 2 than Reception. No toys at all.

With it being a mixed Year1/2 class, it will definitely be a more formal setting.

Its a shame if the younger ones miss out on learning through play because it's mixed. Very boring for 5 year olds to have no toys. Does your child enjoy it?

DD had mixed 1/2 classes (she’s just finished year 2)
In our school, it was quite different from reception, far more structured learning, but there were still toys in the classroom (a shop and cafe), I think they were just more used as learning props
In the “stay and learn” sessions we attended, the learning was very much hands on (toy till and things to add up and buy), lego for multiplication and division) and DD said that was fairly typically how things were presented. DD’s classroom also had a “quiet” corner with soft toys
And they seemed to do lots of crafty stuff and were read to every day

Overall, it seemed like a gentle transition

@Millie2013

That sounds good. Hopefully it's more like that. That's the sort of thing I would expect for a 5 year old. I know they are removing alot of stuff due to this covid 19 outbreak. But I have my fingers crossed year one is a positive year that she enjoys. She's really enjoying trying to write and stuff now.

Thank you.
