Hi, I'm after some advice please. My 7 year old DS is showing signs of possible ADHD and has done for some time. The problem I have is that in school he holds everything in and explodes as soon as he leaves. The doctors made a referral to paediatrics but they have rejected it as it needs to come from school. My issue is it's now nearly the summer holidays so school are unlikely to do anything and it means another 6/7 weeks of no help. Does anyone have any advice or experience of referrals without school? x

yes. been there.

I found a private psychologist who charged £80 per hour to do some initial sessions with DS and wrote a report summarising the issues and recommending specialist assessment for potentially either ADHD or ASD. I was then able to show that report to the GP and they were happy to make the referral to the diagnosis process on the basis of this opinion. I also made an appointment with the school SENCO and showed her the report, and suddenly after years of frustration where the school had been insisting there was no problem, the SENCO started working with the class teachers and helping them to recognise the signs that things weren't right. it's very easy in a class of 30 for the teacher to miss vital evidence that a child is only just barely coping and really needs additional attention.
