Help with Year 1 spelling

My daughter is in Year 1, and is seemingly struggling with selecting the correct diagraph when spelling simple words. E.g. she might write “choo” instead of “chew”.

I am trying to work so hard with her, but I was wondering if anyone could offer any insight into the extent to which this is “normal”, and if anyone has any tips for helping a child to know which diagraph to use. This morning, we did the “er” sound and it’s 5 different iterations Hmm

Is it just a case of learning to remember?!

It's very normal and easy to correct.
Praise her attempt and ask if she knows any other ways to spell the sound /oo/ (she may not have been taught alternative spelling yet depending on the programme the school uses and how much they'd covered before lockdown) so simply tell her that in the word chew we spell /oo/
