Entering year 1 unable to do basics

Do I need to be worrying that my child will be likely starting year 1 unable to write her name or sound out simple CVC words? She can't blend or segment. How do they help the non readers and writers able to keep up?

Not worrying no as if that’s where she is, that’s where she is. She will be supported to progress from there.

Most schools have fluid phonics groups so she will be taught with children at the same level as she is who may not be in her class.

The school i work at doesnt move the children on to the y1 curriculumn until october half term anyway. They started doing this a few years ago.
The school will do some assessments to see where your child is at and will work from that point. I think a lot of children will be not ready for year 1 in september.
Different schools tackle it differently - some do interventions, others try and support more in the classroom. Just make sure the teacher knows you are worried about these things..

They will identify that she needs further support at the beginning of the year, and she will be given the assistance she needs.

My DD entered Yr1 on Pink Level books (Level 1). Writing still illegible. Maths variable. She managed Yr1 fine- work is differentiated anyway, the LSA knew she was one that needed an extra hand, she got extra phonics sessions. SENCO involved aswell. She wasn't the only one who needed to help- there's a massive range of abilities. Some just aren't ready in Reception.

(She's in Yr4 now, and although she isn't devouring War and Peace like social media makes you believe 9yos are, she reads a wide range of stuff. )

Why can't she do that? Is there an identified SEN or learning difficulty?

@lockdownstress She has an EHCP in process but that's for social and emotional difficulties. Apparantly there is no concern about her academic ability 🤷‍♀️

I'm just panicking at how much the gap is widening due to lock down.

Is she summer born by any chance? My August born child despite knowing all phonics sounds before starting school, was unable to grasp blending until the summer term of reception. She could only write her name the correct way 50/50 at the end of term too. A few years on, and her handwriting still isn't neat, but her reading is above average. Blending is like learning to walk, you can't force it before they are ready, but once they are ready, they tend to fly. I honestly don't think missing this term will hold your daughter back, if she is ready when schools go back, she will very quickly catch up. Kids 123 channel on YouTube has some good blending songs.

I had this problem and there is so much you can do at home. Mine (very dyspraxic) just needed twice as long as everyone else to do things. He caught up eventually.
