Spellings

My dd is 9 and really struggles with her spellings. Even when she is writing a text to her friends she will ask me to spell every single word, even very simple words she would have learned in P2. Learning her spellings and doing apps doesn't seem to make a difference - we could take time to learn spellings over the week and she would get some of them right by the end of the week if I tested her. However, as soon as she is not in 'test' mode she completely forgets it.

Do you think that this is something that she will just 'get' over time? I am focusing on having her read a bit more at the minute, and hoping in time that will help with her spellings. As honestly I'm worried that sitting making her learn them every week is just a waste of time? and frustrating for both of us.

My 9yo son is the same it's like they just won't stay in his brain! Even basic things he often gets ie/ei round the wrong way in words like friend!!
We did the same 10 words every day for a week and he made the same mistakes every time!

I actually think it's because of things like predicted text or auto correct on phones/iPads that they don't have to think about spelling and then when it comes to writing them down physically on paper their minds go blank?!
