Why the obsession with WW2?

Following on from another thread, I can't understand why the KS2 curriculum is so obsessed with the Second World War. My dd covered it twice in Primary school, and will actually do it again in , I think, year 8. So many other things happened in the 20th century - the fall of the Berlin Wall for example!

DD only did it once at primary (yr 3 I think). Don't know about Yr 8 yet. I can't understand why they would do it twice in primary though, seems a bit daft. I can understand in Yr 3 though. Its an easy topic I suppose because they do The Home Front which I guess the children can kinda 'connect' with, what with the evacuees.
