When are Year Two SATS?

Ds has gone into yr two today, I was informed by another mother that this year is 'important' as it is SAT year ( she looked quite demonic as she said it)- Must admit - things like this go over my head so should I pencil it into my wall planner ? and if so- is there a specific date that it happens?

Summer term, around half term.

Wouldn't worry about them - DS's school did them so that the children don't even know they are being tested. They are not for the child's benefit anyway - are useful to find out how the child is getting on.

Don't let the mother's make a big deal out of it.

Oh and I have put an unwanted apostrophe in as well in mother's - just as well I don't have to sit the damn things!

will try not to- I knew they had tests in yr 6 (?) but not this yr.

wont mention it to ds- he is quite highly strug as it is!

DS just gone into Yr 2 here too. And I am clueless about SATs. What exactly are they for?

as it is almost all teachers assessment anyway a lot of it is a continuation of how the year 1 teacher has been assessing the child as far as the child/parent is concerned. The school has to send the figures off to the dfes (no names) also a way of assessing the teacher who has targets to reach

it does give an objective assessment of a child at the end of infants as before sats teachers would write things such as "reading is satisfactory" in reports which really means very little

Year 2 SATS are the two weeks prior to May half term. Don't worry about them, imho! Most schools now just do them as part of a lesson, so hopefully they won't even realise they are doing them. Unfortunately, you will get the parent at the gate who is hell bent on scaring the life out of their child about it and in turn shares their fears with their class mates! Really, they are nothing to worry about and I really don't think there's any need to revise for them. The yr 2 SATS are purely to give the teacher a guide as to how they are doing. All children do tests in these two weeks, its just the Yr2 ones which are recorded on a national level.

They test reading, writing, maths and science and speaking and comprehension s(I think that is all) and the children get a level. Level 1 is below average, 2 is average and 3 is above average. I think it is maths that is split into 2c, 2b and 2a as well.

The teachers do the testing and the children really don't know they are being done. We were advised that it would be just before and just after half term in the summer term. Got the results as part of the end of year report the day before the end of term.

They are a measure of how well the school is doing and whether they are adding value based on the base entry level of the children in Yr R, i.e. what they can do when they arrived in school.

No idea what the tests involve as I can't ask DS as he doesn't even know he has done them.

I am sure a teacher will come along who knows more than me but I don't think it is cause for cramming and extra tuition despite what some parents might think!

My DDs private school doesn't even bother with year 2 SATs. They are NOT something that a child will need to cite on their CV!

From memory, the English is split into sections. Reading, comprehension and spelling. Maths is mental arithmatic.

In May sometime. Ignore them - they are for the benefit of the teachers and make absolutely no difference to the children at all, in spite of what the alpha mummies tell you. There will be children and parents who stress over SATS - and sadly some teachers do too, but IMHO, the best thing to do is to let it go over your and ds's heads and avoid anyone who tries to make a big deal out of it.

They're only internally assessed, if they still do them, anyway. Ours don't do them, either at KS1 or KS2 - use PIPS instead.

teachers stress over them as it is one of the ways that their line managers can see that they are working hard, the class as an average is making progress and the teacher isn't just doing sand and water play (important as it is)

Some children love it as they feel important and are doing special work

IIRC there is now no required time for year 2 SATs. The results have to be 'in' by some time in June so most schools do the tests as near to this date as possible so that they have the longest possible time to get the children prepared. But, if there was some reason why the tested work didn't reflect the child's ability as shown throughout the year, the teacher can over-rule the result - with evidence of course.
The vast majority of schools make them as child friendly as possible and do everything they can to not let the children get stressed about them. Don't let other parents worry you.
