5 year old in reception.

Can't write her name, brother is Sam* which she writes 'was'

She just came in and said "mummy this says ..."

She doesn't seem to get the concept of writing sentences? Isn't yet blending/segmenting simple cvc words.

At what point do I need to perhaps start to worry?

I have no experience in 5yo writing but her drawing is excellent! Love the curly antennae!

Yes her drawing skills are amazing!

Neither of my DCs could read or write much at all until they were properly in year 1. Both done well at school ever since. Don't worry, or ask her teacher

There is something about this drawing which catches the eye. Beautiful colours and the use of black sketch pen for outlines! Lovely

Forgot about the handwriting! Yes speak to the teacher ... maybe she just need little help with it.

Try going through high frequency flashcards with her. I found this much more useful in the beginning than the individual phonics sounds. From my experience once they can recognise these words it kind of clicks with the phonics.

It didn't really click for my daughter until the first term of year one. She's not even halfway through reception. Give it time.
