Kids are expected to know various spelling rules as well as "tricky words" etc. AFAIK they can be tested on any word but there are lists of age-related words they should know (by school year) so if your child knows all these they should be able to do the paper.

The words in the spelling test are not the ones from the year 6 word list ( eg accommodate/accompany/etc etc) but are words that follow the spelling patterns learnt over KS2-so anything from -ssion ,-ough, homophones, -ible etc.
The word list ones are thoe that the children are expected to demonstrate they can spell within their writing. When our local authority moderates year 6 writing levels they look out for a range of "word list " words spelled correctly-which is why you get lots of writing about disastrous yachts!

Look at this page:

linguisticphonics.wordpress.com/phonics-from-eyfs-y6/

It has all the Y3/4/5/6 spelling objectives and spelling lists grouped by sound.

All the tests are KS2 tests, not just Y6 ones - only around 40% of any paper is specifically Y6 content, hence the revision that goes on in Y6.

This is another good spelling website:

This site gives you lists of all common exceptions to the main English spelling patterns

Biscuit The spelling reform society only create obstacles not solutions Masha!

I think they can range from year 3 to year 6 spellings.

spanieleyes · 14/02/2020 20:50

As Feenie pointed out, SATS are end-of-key-stage tests and not end-of-year 6 tests so can and do include things covered over the four years of the key stage.

Norestformrz
I've no idea why you mentioned The spelling reform society. The link I gave just lists all common words with irregular spellings.
Some sounds are spelt very regularly, others have lots of variants which take a lot of learning literacyproblems.blogspot.com/2019/11/english-spelling.html

spanieleyes · 15/02/2020 08:01

Well, 4 year olds manage so I'm sorry if you're struggling!

Norestformrz · 15/02/2020 11:40

I'm sure you do know Masha
