Get out a chess board.
Show them how the pieces move.
Remove 3/4 of your pieces and play a game?

Magnus Carlsen apps are excellent.
Often in chess clubs they start with pawns game, then add the other pieces once they’ve got the hang of the moves

I just set the board up and started playing against myself, explaining what I was doing with each piece and why. He was fascinated. Then he had a go and we talked through the moves together.

Here's the Magnus Carlsen "Kingdom of Chess" app. My kid (5yo) just loved the game, but at the end he could play a game of chess. It is definitely the easiest way I've found to teach a kid chess if you can't play (and perhaps learn yourself).
