St Michaels Otford

Does anybody know what is happening with the Head Mistress Suspension at St Michaels Prep School in Kent? We were going to put our boy on the waiting list but are a bit nervous as we have been told the head teacher has been suspended but the school has not told us why. Are there any current parents who can advise whether they think the school is good? We are also considering Russell House in Otford.

Bumping as we were / are also considering st Michael's

Suspension doesn't mean you are guilty. It is a way to investigate both sides of any argument or accusation. The information is confidential.

Heard about the Head Mistress Suspension from friends. The school never let the parents know about the outcome, and the Head Mistress resigned conveniently after about 4 month or so.

St Michael's has fantastic grounds from what I hear, but the school is not up to standard. If you looking for an academic school where your kids will be challenged and prepared, St. Michael's is not the school for you.

There are a few very good schools in the area. Russell House(co-ed), Walthamstow Hall(girls only), Granville(girls only). With Granville probably being the most academic and really the best school at this point in time.

Has anyone had first hand experience of more than one school in the area? It is difficult to compare without genuine experience...

Jennie 2020 what a ridiculous comment - my son has been at StMichaels for over a year - he has gone from his previous school where he was crying every day to loving each day of learning.
St michaels is not an academic hothouse - but having been at 3 other schools from nursery through to pre prep (and visited about 8 private and the same number of state schools in my choosing) I can honestly say the balance of academic and pastoral care is without peer.
I cannot speak highly enough of the school, the teachers and the parents ... it is an exceptional school and I would recommend (once this mess is over) anyone visiting it in person who is interested.

I'd be interested too. We were impressed with Sevenoaks prep and Russell House but need to make a choice soon!

Nice façade, but sadly that’s about it. Avoid at any cost!

Pre-prep is ok. Prep pretty poor at best.

No spelling, very little homework (school policy) and not the best staff.

Very poor management indeed at St. Michael’s. From the six month drama where they suspended the schools head, to legal disputes raised by parents or the school, to a certain teacher posing as a parent on some forum making the school look good and who knows what (can’t confirm the last statement, rumour that went around the school). Worst school I have ever seen.

Of course, there are people who love the school. Guess they have no idea, have nothing to compare it with or just love the extremely relaxed environment. The school also has a very high turnover in terms of students and staff, that says something.

How do some kids move on to good secondary schools?
Well, my daughter spent a year at St. Michael’s. She went to a very academic school before, so she was ahead. She said there is nothing she learned at St. Michael’s in the year she spent there. That says a lot!
So, the kids who move on to the top schools would be attending 11+ clubs, kumon or/and have private tutors. St. Michael’s will not prepare your kid for decent secondary school.

How do pick the right school?
Very difficult indeed to find the right school. You can certainly not trust the marketing department at St. Michael’s for example. They will sell the school at any cost. The various school reports that are out there can also be very misleading for the obvious reasons. Parents will have different opinions and most of them have nothing to compare it with, so they don’t know. Look at schools ahead of time, talk to as many parents as you can and do your online research. It also looks like the students of the various schools have the most information, they would be able to tell you all about it. They hear from students who have moved on from other schools and so on.

Parent 089 I couldn't disagree more - you clearly have an axe to grind and your information is incorrect (and borderline slanderous)
Re having nothing to compare it to - previously my son went to Radnor House, Bickley Park and Farringtons - St Michaels is by far the best school out of them by all measures, and a considerable margin.
Finally if the school is so terrible how come the head of Sevenoaks school sends his children to St Michaels?
Anyone really wants to know what a fantastic school St Michaels is - please feel free to private message me.
