Is this normal for primary reading?

My dc1 started school in August. So far we have had 9 reading books home. Each week they get the book read to them class, then increasingly read the book until Thursday when they are supposed to read the whole book.
Dc1 is scunnered with the school books, came home today read the book start to finish. I covered bits of the sentences and could do all the harder words.
I’m not sure how best to support them, as my book lover is being put off by school reading. I was hoping for some helpful advice as to how to support best?

Just pay lip service to the school reading books and get her books she's interested in from the library - some she can read easily, some she needs a little help with and some you need to read to her. I say this as a year 1 teacher!

Thanks, that’s what i thought. It just seems slightly fraudulent signing each night to say we’ve done the section of the book we’re supposed to have covered . I also am concerned that if they aren’t getting 100% when reading the book in class they won’t get moved on, so we get caught in vicious cycle.

Just sign on night 1 to say whole book read & then sign on the other nights for whatever home/library books are read.
That way the school know reading has been done but dd doesn't get bored.

Most kids I knew flew through the school reading book once (a confident reader will do it in 2 minutes flat so it's not going to be off putting) then read whatever they wanted at home.

We bought collections from the book people - both loved Dirty Bertie at that age, or just go to the local library.

I’d get other reading books - from the library, or box sets from the book people etc - and read those as well.

All my kids found school reading books very easy. It’s incredibly common. Just jump through the hoops. The teacher will be well aware of their reading level.

I spoke to the teacher about the level of book, and was told that too many mistakes are made in the harder level to move up. Needs to be reading at 95% when tested on harder level to move up.
We read every night, it’s just hard to know what to do to encourage and maintain enthusiasm. Had a look in local library but all are far too hard for current pink book band.
