Starting primary in Scotland

We are moving from England in June and I want to know what classes my children will be in as it’s different.
My youngest was due to start reception this September and his date of birth is 24 feb 2016. His brother is currently in year one and his birthday is 9 July 2014
Can anyone help?

Hi your children are a similar age to mine and we're up in Scotland. Your eldest would be in Primary 1 in June and move up to Primary 2 in August. Your youngest is currently at the age for attending preschool. With a February birthday he would be eligible to have another year at nursery from August or you could choose to put him into primary 1 instead. He'd be one of the youngest in the class as the cut-off is the last day in Feb.

The other thing to consider if you don't defer ds2 and put him into P1 is that at the end of his school career (yes, I know, that seems forever away ), he would have finished all his exams, done both Highers (S5) and Advanced Highers (S6 - Scottish equivalent of A Levels) if he is academically minded and would still only be 17 . He would therefore spend most of his first year at Uni "underage" and unable to drink which may or may not be a good thing

I went to Uni at age 16 after leaving school after S5. Didnt stop me drinking!!

I'm in Scotland I kept my son in preschool for an extra year. My sons birthday is Feb 2015. Most of the teachers and children's nurses advise on this with boys because they tend to be more immature than girls. Of course every child is different but at least you have the option.

I went from S5 too Dementedpixie but was "only" 17.5 so only had 6 months of underage drinking

But they're much stricter nowadays and ID cards harder to forge: ds (mid September birthday so in the mid/young half of the Scottish school cohort) only turned 18 on the day that lectures started so was underage during Freshers Week. He was able to drink at "pres" (and we gave him a supply to get him started) but couldn't go to many of the Fresher events (especially those at Night Clubs of which there seemed to be an inordinate amount ) because he wasn't yet 18. He also had to carry his passport everywhere even once he was 18 in order to prove his age as they wouldn't accept either the Uni card or the Young Scot card (both apparently too easy to forge). It was Ian incentive to him to get his provisional licence as that is also accepted as proof of age.

Nor like the good old days then?! Cant believe I graduated 25 years ago - god I'm old now!
